Suzanne and Walter Scott Jr.
Suzanne and Walter Scott Jr. have provided unrivaled vision and support to UNMC. They organized the philanthropic efforts to build the Durham Research Center. Their gift establishes the Scott Education Center on the main level of the Durham Research Center. The Scott Education Center will comprise core research laboratories, classrooms, seminar rooms, an auditorium and atrium. "The great thing about medical research is that it benefits people, whether it be in Nebraska, the United States or around the world. Medical research is something everybody needs to be interested in," Walter Scott said. Scott is chairman of Level 3 Communications, Inc. The corporation is one of the firms created by the 1998 separation of the two operating divisions of Peter Kiewit Sons’ Inc., for which Scott served as chairman and CEO for 19 years. Scott was first elected to the Kiewit board in 1964. In 1979, he was elected president. When Peter Kiewit died later that same year, Scott was selected to succeed him as chairman. Scott serves as a director of Berkshire Hathaway, Burlington Resources, Commonwealth Telephone Enterprises, Level 3 Communications Inc., MidAmerican Energy Holdings, RCN Corp., Valmont Industries and Peter Kiewit Sons’ Inc. He is a director of the Joslyn Art Museum, Nebraska Game and Parks Foundation, and the Omaha Development Foundation. Nationally, he is a director of the Horatio Alger Association and the National Forest Association. Suzanne Scott is a fourth-generation Nebraskan and daughter of a Lincoln dentist. A graduate of the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, she taught for eight years as a primary grade school teacher. She is executive director of the Omaha Zoo Foundation. Throughout her life, Suzanne Scott has volunteered her time and expertise to countless organizations and agencies. She currently serves on the board of directors and executive committee of the United Way of the Midlands. Some of the agencies that have benefited from her leadership include: Boys & Girls Club of Omaha, National Boys and Girls Clubs of America, Omaha Zoological Society, Services for Children Inc., Joslyn Art Museum and the Salvation Army Advisory Board. She has served the University of Nebraska Medical Center as president of the Faculty Women's Association. "Over the years I’ve seen UNMC grow into the facility that it is now. It’s been rewarding to see that happen. It’s really up there with the best. I’m very proud that our kids graduated from there and are doing fabulous things in medicine and perhaps the research center will be beneficial to their needs in the future," Suzanne Scott said. |
