How To Knock The Socks Off The Emergency Attending

Lee Millward, MD

Books you must buy and must read back to front. Trust me, you will look like a stud!

Don’t  worry, they’re not War and Peace. They concentrate on the essentials: the stuff you’ll actually be pimped about because it is important to the practice  of EM.

Tarascon Adult Emergency Pocketbook (approx. $12)

Emergency Medicine Secrets (approx. $40)

Try your best to read these before you start your rotation.

Do your Nebraska emergency month 2-3 months into your 4th year. You will need to do it early so that you will perform better on your away emergency rotation, which you will need to complete early enough to get letters of rec into ERAS.

I strongly recommend a rotation in internal med or critical care prior to your emergency rotation. Radiology is very helpful also.

When presenting patients, always start off your PE with the vitals.

Always have a differential and a plan (even if you’re not sure). There is nothing weaker than a long winded presentation with no plan. If you get into the habit of having no clinical opinion you will soon be passively floating along in the ED and will easily be forgotten (no matter how good you are on paper).
