Visiting Elective

Thank you for considering rotating here at the University of Nebraska Medical Center in the Department of Emergency Medicine. All initial requests to rotate here at UNMC must be made to Sue Pope by email spope@unmc.edu with your name, name of medical school, area of interest, and at least 2 months you are able to rotate here. Visiting students will not be approved to rotate during the months of April, May or June. Please copy Kelly Deerson kdeerson@unmc.edu on the initial request to Sue Pope when requesting an Emergency Medicine (EM) rotation.

Visiting students will rotate here at The Nebraska Medical Center University hospital, which will show the operation of an emergency department in a large community by full-time faculty of the College of Medicine and allows students and direct patient contact under supervision of an attending physician. This rotation includes lectures on the topics of Chest Pain, Abdominal Pain, Toxicology, and Ultrasound in the emergency department. EM Chiefs conduct a splint lab while on this rotation. Medical students will be required to perform an observation on an ambulance with Omaha Fire Department. During the months of September through April, those interested in Air Medicine can request flight time with LifeNet, Air medical services. While on this rotation, students are required to read "First Exposure to Emergency Medicine" (textbooks provided at no cost) and complete a post-test.

Students interested in pursuing EM as a career are strongly encouraged to arrange a rotation in the months of July - December so that your experience may be used in support of your ERAS application. While here, we suggest you schedule a meeting with an EM faculty member to discuss your chosen specialty and possibly request a Standard Letter of Recommendation.
