The former chair of the Department of Otolaryngology - Head and Neck Surgery at UNMC, Dr. Anthony Yonkers now totally devotes his skills to patient care and the education of medical students and residents. A diplomat of the American Board of Otolaryngology and the American Board of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, Dr. Yonkers is a fellow in the American Academy of Otolaryngology – Head and Neck Surgery and the American College of Surgeons.
He attended medical school at the University of Michigan, and served a rotating internship and a year of General Surgery at St. Joseph Mercy Hospital in Ann Arbor, Mich. He then took his residency in Otolaryngology at Barnes Hospital, Washington University School of Medicine, St. Louis, Mo. Dr. Yonkers joined the Air Force under the 'Berry Plan,' relocating to Offutt Air Force Base, Omaha, where he served as chief of the Division of Otolaryngology until his discharge from active duty in June 1970.
Retired from the United States Air Force Reserve after 27 years, Dr. Yonkers most recently served as Individual Mobilization Augmentee (IMA) to the USSTRATCOM Command Surgeon, Offutt Air Force Base, and continues to serve as Military Consultant to the Surgeon General for Otolaryngology.
Dr. Yonkers joined the faculty at the University of Nebraska in July 1970, becoming chairman and director of the residency program in 1974 and full professor in 1978.
He serves on three editorial boards: American Journal of Rhinology, Ear, Nose and Throat Journal, and Journal of Aviation, Space and Environmental Medicine. He has been included in The Best Doctors of America since 1994, and actively participates in numerous professional organizations.
A Knight in the Order of St. Lazarus, an order of chivalry dating to the year 1095, Dr. Yonkers is past Commander of the Midwest Grand Commandry. The current mission of the Order is to assist organ and tissue transplantation patients and care of patients with Leprosy.
Dr. Yonkers is also past president and an active member of Omaha Sunrise Lion’s Club.
He and his wife, Mary, have four children - Anthony J. Jr., Mary K., John A. and Laurie A., and seven grandchildren.
A flying enthusiast, Dr. Yonkers owns a Mooney 201 (M-20J), which he uses for business as well as recreation. He also enjoys snow skiing, jet skiing and hiking.
