The UNMC's Prevention of Global Blindness Division is being co-managed by International Division medical director and adjunct assistant professor, Dr. Michael Feilmeier, and development director, Jessica Feilmeier.
The Global Blindness Prevention Division seeks to be a leader amongst ophthalmic institutions working to eradicate preventable and curable blindness in the developing world.
“Our ultimate goal is that the development of the International Division will enhance the UNMC Department of Ophthalmology and serve as a catalyst for increased International exposure experiences for medical students, ophthalmology residents, fellows, graduate students, researchers and faculty while simultaneously helping to restore sight and prevent needless blindness wherever our work takes us," said Jessica Feilmeier.
Utilizing a three-pronged approach that includes skills-transfer education, eye care delivery and sustainable development, the International Division works to expose UNMC Department of Ophthalmology faculty, residents, fellows and UNMC medical students to the work and global need while simultaneously facilitating avenues for cross-educational exchange and training of International eye care workers.
- Skills Transfer Education: The International Division acknowledges the importance of teaching ophthalmic care at all levels and to that end seeks to establish six education platforms: Residency; Subspecialty; Medical Student; Allied Health; Continuing Education and E-Learning. Through this framework, skills-transfer education will be taught and provided both overseas and locally within the Department of Ophthalmology.
- Eye Care Delivery:Through outreach missions abroad, the International Division will partner with local eye care teams to provide eye health screenings, identifying and treating people with preventable and curable eye diseases.
- Sustainable Development: In collaboration with established programs, the division will support the development of sustainable infrastructure within the countries where we work to enable these countries to meet the future eye care needs of their communities.
