Department of Family Medicine
Call Rules

The “call pool" is comprised of 2nd and 3rd year residents who will cover supervisor call at both UNMC and EBH. Most residents will have 10 or 11 calls from this pool for the entire year, plus a holiday shift. If you did the math, you would think you’d average 1 call a month. Unfortunately, this is not the case. Because of the “new” work hour rules, residents are not available for the pool during rotations that have their own built-in call. These rotations include UNMC Clinic Chief, mole month, EBH inpatient chief, GYN, Advanced Peds, Rural Months, DEM, Rheumatology, VA Renal, ICU, advanced OB, etc.

Every effort has been made to be fair in equalizing the number of Saturdays on call. Also, care was taken to give equal numbers of UNMC and EBH calls.

Holidays

Everyone has been assigned a 12-hour holiday shift. Residents scheduled more than one holiday shift will have fewer regular call days to compensate.

Vacations

All vacation requests received by June 4, 2004, were honored in making the schedule. This does not imply that your vacation is approved. Simply, if you were planning on requesting vacation, we did not place you on call during that time. This includes maternity and paternity leaves for which we were aware. From this point forward, it is your responsibility to find coverage for your assigned call shift if you are unavailable.

Schedule Changes

If you trade calls with another resident, you must notify one of the chief residents. This way, we can keep the schedule current, ensuring coverage is maintained. Also, we are required to review changes for work hour violations. This is very important for our program maintaining accreditation. Please do not create a situation in which you exceed the 30/80-hour rule. ACGME considers this a violation regardless of who created the problem.
