Sports Medicine Training Room & Event Coverage

The following is a menu of opportunities to fulfill your sports medicine requirement. Listed are the Family Physicians who provide coverage for the events and their contact information. I have also given addresses to the venues.

Training Room hours will generally be in the late afternoon. Please contact either Monty Mathews, M.D. or Hank Lau, M.D. early in the day on which you are scheduled to firm up the time. Please wear normal work attire to the training room sessions. Generally, the best time of year to do training room medicine is the fall and winter. The training room sessions usually last an hour or less.

When you are attending an event, you will need to contact the Family Physician covering the event to find out when you need to arrive at the venue. UNO football, soccer and hockey games will require access passes which you will need prior to entering the venue. Please contact the covering Family Physician or Monty Mathews, M.D. to secure those passes. These passes need to be returned to the Athletic Training staff or the Family Physician covering the event prior to you leaving that event. The Family Physician covering the event will introduce you to the Athletic Trainer covering the event. Appropriate dress for events is generally slacks and a polo or long sleeve shirt (preferably red, black, white or combination for UNO events). Jackets, sweater or sweatshirts are ok in cooler weather and in the hockey venues. Jeans and T-shirts are not appropriate. Shorts are acceptable at warm weather soccer games.

Your role at the events will be at the discretion of the Family Physician covering the event. The UNO Athletic Training staff and students will always evaluate the athlete initially and involve the Family Physician or Orthopedist at the appropriate time. Once the athlete is off the field of play, you are encouraged to observe the Athletic Trainer’s assessment, evaluation and treatment and involve yourself in the care, if when the Athletic Trainer requests your help.

For soccer and football games we can have 2 residents on the sidelines. Hockey we have room for one resident. The Wrestling tournaments we will need 3 to 5 residents. We will need 3 to 6 residents for the Omaha Marathon. For the Wrestling tournaments and the Omaha Marathon we expect you to be available for a period of at least 2 to 3 hours. Time can usually be negotiated.

If you have family members or a friend you would like to bring to the game, Monty Mathews, M.D usually has a few extra tickets. The tickets will generally not allow Family and Friends to be on the sidelines. Please notify Monty Mathews, M.D. if you need extra tickets as early as possible. When playoff games are announced we will notify you of the dates and need for help.

Training room sessions are supervised by Monty Mathews, M.D. or Hank Lau, M.D.  Dr. Mathews attends training room on Tuesdays and Dr. Lau on Wednesdays. These sessions occur late in the day (4 to 6pm) and vary from week to week. You will need to notify your supervising physician the day of your session to firm up the time. They training room is located on the lower level at the east end of the SAPP field house. Your supervising physician can give you parking instructions and firm up other details on the day of your training room session.
