Hundreds of students graduate from UNMC every year. But some don't even see the Omaha campus until their graduation day.

UNMC has placed a priority on developing Distance Learning options for students outside the Omaha area. Formal lectures and clinical case conferences are coordinated by the Omaha programs at the UNMC site, then delivered by satellite television or televideo to students at other clinical sites in Nebraska.

This allows students to stay in their hometowns, take care of their families, and commute to nearby classroom and clinical centers instead of uprooting themselves and moving to Omaha.

Phyllis Muellenberg, M.A., is Associate Professor and Chair and Program Director, Division of Medical Technology. Her special interests include rural education, distance learning, microbiology, clinical microscopy, management and education topics.

"Our program faculty have been successful in obtaining $1.2 million in grant funding in the last several years," she said. "This has made it possible for us to develop and maintain the Rural Education Distance Learning Program, as well as compete effectively for funds to support continuing education programs, recruitment and education of allied health practitioners in areas of cultural competency."
