Shelley Smith, Ph.D.
She and her collaborators are working on projects to clone the reading disability gene on chromosome 6 and to localize genes for attention deficit hyperactivity disorder. With this research, more credit will be given to the connection between behavioral disorders and genetic influences. In her hearing loss research, Dr. Smith found that the genes that cause hearing loss show variability in expression between family members, suggesting that modifying genes exist. Dr. Smith is a professor of pediatrics and the interim director of the
Center for Human Molecular Genetics at UNMC's Munroe-Meyer Institute.
A native of Iowa, she earned her B.A. from Grinnell College in Grinnell,
Iowa, and her Ph.D. in medical genetics from Indiana University. Related links: Shelly Smith, M.D.,
