Interdisciplinary Graduate Program in Biomedical Sciences - IGPBS (Ph.D.)

The IGPBS is an umbrella Ph.D program that provides an interdisciplinary approach to basic science training in areas of research expertise (Doctoral Programs) within the College of Medicine and the Eppley Institute for Cancer Research. In addition to core and elective coursework, IGPBS students complete up to 3 laboratory rotations in order to familiarize themselves with specific research opportunities within Doctoral Programs of interest. Once choosing a laboratory and committing to a Doctoral Program, students pursue advanced training and dissertation research leading to the Ph.D degree.

The 6 Doctoral Programs within the IGPBS are: Integrative Physiology & Molecular Medicine; Immunology, Pathology & Infectious Disease; Biochemistry & Molecular Biology; Molecular Genetics & Cell Biology; Cancer Research; and Neuroscience. On the application you will initially have to select only one program. At this point, you can either commit to an individual IGPBS doctoral program OR select the "All IGPBS Programs (uncommitted)" option. If you want the option to rotate and later select among any of the IGPBS doctoral programs and laboratories, please select "All IGPBS Programs (uncommitted)." If you choose this option you will subsequently be prompted in questions section of the "All IGPBS Programs (uncommitted)" program materials section of the application to choose two (2) doctoral programs that most interest you. These programs can accept you, but you will still retain the option to participate in any of the IGPBS doctoral programs and commit to a later time to any of the IGPBS doctoral programs.

When submitting your application for the IGPBS, you will have two options:

  1. You can apply for "All IGPBS Programs (Uncommitted)". This option means that you prefer to have the option to perform research rotations in any laboratory affiliated with the IGPBS.  When you choose "All IGPBS Programs (Uncommitted)" in the admission application, you will be prompted to choose two (2) doctoral programs that most interest you in the "Questions" section of the "Program Materials" portion of the application.
  2. You can choose to commit immediately to one of the six doctoral programs listed by completing the application for the doctoral program of interest.
i.e. "IGPBS: Biochemistry & Molecular Biology Only (Committed)"
