A Project of the University of Nebraska Medical Center

Beginning in 1998, research was funded at the University of Nebraska Medical Center by The Greenwall Foundation to identify and consider some of the environmental aspects of health care that raise ethical issues.

The initial project, “The Green Health Center” identified some of the ethical dilemmas that arise in considering the environmental impact of health care and envisioned what a more environmentally sound and ethically responsible set of health care services might be like.

A second project, “Exploring Bioethics Upstream” considered some of the “upstream” environmental costs of health care—that is, those that are involved in the system of manufacture and supply of materials used in health care. The project helped to identify points in the system of supply where ethical considerations might be brought to bear.

Two Working Groups met frequently during 1998 through 2001 to consider these areas of concern. So far, one book, The Ethics of Environmentally Responsible Health Care by Oxford University Press, and a number of articles have resulted from the two projects. Other materials are in preparation for publication. This web site summarizes some of the activities, concerns, personnel, and publications of these two projects.

More information about these projects may be obtained at this web site or by contacting Andrew Jameton.
