The UNMC/UNO Health Informatics Program is a multidisciplinary program that integrates healthcare information management, computer science, information system design and management in the healthcare sector. The program responds to the urgent and growing need for a new kind of specialist who understands the intersection of these fields. The vision of the Masters program in Health Informatics is to develop specialists who are uniquely positioned to advance the practice of health informatics in modern healthcare organizations.
The strength of the program at UNMC lies in the ability to leverage the expertise at both The University of Nebraska at Omaha and the University of Nebraska Medical Center, two institutions within the University of Nebraska system. Faculty from the College of Medicine, the College of Nursing, and the College of Information Science and Technology all collaborate to provide a strong educational program with strengths in both the healthcare and technological aspects of health informatics.
The program is designed to accommodate both healthcare domain experts as well as technology specialists. The curriculum is flexible. Individualized programs of study will be designed to accommodate students existing knowledge and career goals. Distance options (telephone conferencing, virtual network, and e-learning tools) are available for most courses. Students work closely with faculty members involved in informatics research and development. Research projects are available in multiple clinical environments including the Nebraska Medical Center, the Family Healthcare Center, the Mobile Nursing Center, and the Senior Health Promotion Center and others.
