Integrated Advanced Information Management System

The Integrated Advanced Information Management System (IAIMS) project undertaken by the University of Nebraska Medical Center (UNMC) and the Nebraska Medical Center (NMC) will drive important research activity that will shape the future of information management within the UNMC and NMC environments. The outcome will guide the progress of a comprehensive and convenient information management system to bring usable knowledge to action settings in health care, education and research. This strategy will serve as a long-range guide for prioritization of information management projects and enterprise-wide adoption of "information best practices."

This project is supported through the National Library of Medicine (NLM).  IAIMS is a national effort which was initiated in 1984 to help academic health sciences centers plan and implement organizational and technological mechanisms to better manage the knowledge of medicine. UNMC was awarded a planning grant "Advancing Academic and Community Practices through IAIMS" in 2005 to clarify the attitudes, needs, and expectations of physicians toward information management. The project will be completed in February of 2007, and will include:

  • Assessment of the technology usage gap and the readiness for information technology innovation between the UNMC, NMC, and academic and private practice providers by use of focus groups and interviews.
  • Evaluation of the impact of current information technology projects on the academic and private practice provider communities.
  • Gap analysis to identify what differences in information management needs exist between the UNMC, NMC, and the academic and private practice providers.
  • Creation of an integrated Information Management Strategy for UNMC and NMC.
  • Identification of key interventions and resources that will move the organizations toward a common information management vision and encourage broad implementation of its information management goals.
