Job Description for Director of
Munroe-Meyer Institute for Genetics and Rehabilitation

The University of Nebraska Medical Center announces a search for a new director of the Munroe-Meyer Institute for Genetics and Rehabilitation. The mission of Munroe-Meyer Institute (MMI), the Nebraska University Center on Disabilities, is to improve the quality of life for persons with disabilities and for their families.

A principal role of the Institute is to conduct basic and applied research in a variety of disciplines related to the mission. The Institute provides interdisciplinary family centered services and support for individuals with disabilities, and provides training in the field of developmental disabilities through interdisciplinary educational experiences.

MMI is a member of the federally designated University Centers for Excellence in Developmental Disabilities (UCEDD) and the national network of Leadership Education in Neurodevelopmental and Related Disabilities (LEND) programs.

MMI is one of the largest UCEDD's in the United States and enjoys support from The Hattie B. Munroe Foundation, an independent philanthropic organization that provides excellent infrastructure and other resources for the sustenance, growth and development of the Institute.

Currently the Institute employs 35 faculty members and more than 200 staff members, who carry out research and provide diagnosis and treatment for about 11,000 individuals annually.

MMI is an independent academic unit of the University of Nebraska Medical Center (UNMC), a free-standing academic health sciences center that is a member of the four-campus University of Nebraska system.  MMI is located in Omaha, the state's largest city.

The director of the Institute reports directly to the Chancellor of the Medical Center, along with the deans of the UNMC Colleges of Dentistry, Graduate Studies, Medicine, Nursing, Pharmacy, and Public Health; and the director of the UNMC Eppley Cancer Center.

The director of the Institute will be expected to provide leadership that will facilitate the growth of extramurally funded research and training; increase the scope and volume of the patient care enterprise while maintaining the outstanding quality and reputation of the Institute; and to continue the development of the educational mission of the Institute.

The qualified candidate will have an M.D. or equivalent professional degree, and / or a Ph.D. or equivalent academic degree in an appropriate discipline. He or she is expected to have professional experience commensurate with the assumption of the leadership role for the direction of a large interdisciplinary rehabilitation institute, including an established record of research in a field appropriate to the missions and functions of MMI, as well as relevant clinical and educational experience; and an academic history commensurate with appointment in an appropriate UNMC academic unit. In addition, familiarity with the UCEDD and LEND programs will be a useful attribute.

Omaha is a mid-sized city notable for its strong, diversified economy; excellent and varied opportunities for cultural and recreational activities; outstanding public and private education systems that produce a highly-educated workforce; and especially, a high quality of life for both active singles and families, with a very favorable cost of living.
