Biosafety Training Program
General biosafety training is required by all individuals conducting research on the UNMC/UNO campuses that involve biohazardous materials.
The NIH Guidelines state that it is the responsibility of the institution "to ensure appropriate training for ....principal investigators and laboratory staff regarding safety and implementation of the NIH Guidelines (Section IV-B-1-h).
Documentation of successful completion of training is required in order to receive an IBC approval, whether involved with a new application or for a re-application. After the initial training, General Biosafety re-training is required every 3 years while BSL-3 and Select Agent re-training, if necessary, are done on an annual basis.
Three training programs are available, depending on the type of IBC protocol. All individuals require the General Biosafety Training (Modules 1A, 1B, 1C, 1D, and 1E ). Additionally, individuals working with risk group 3 agents (utilizing biosafety level 3 containment) must have BSL-3 training (Module 2) and those individuals working with select agents are required to have Select Agent and Toxin training (Module 3).
Individuals are enrolled for the appropriate training by inclusion as a participant on a new or currently active IBC protocol. For individuals not listed on an IBC protocol, contact Peter Iwen at 9-7774 for information on how to access to the web-based training.
Once an individual is enrolled in the training module(s), an e-mail notification will be sent for admittance to the training. All training modules can be accessed through Blackboard at my.unmc.edu.
Utilization of the program links listed below is for informational purposes only. To complete the testing and to record successful completion of the training requires enrollment and access to the program via Blackboard.
