The educational programs at UNMC train more health professionals who are practicing in Nebraska than any other institution. Learn more about our chairman, our program directors and our chief residents.
At UNMC, residents can pursue three to five year residencies in several specialties and subspecialties. While the major teaching resource for most UNMC residency programs is University Hospital, residents may gain experience through a variety of off-site clinics and affiliated settings, including Clarkson Hospital which has merged with UNMC to form Nebraska Medical Center. The Turner Park Clinic: A Success Story
The Turner Park clinic in midtown Omaha was established in 1996 to provide care to a previously underserved area of the city. Physicians and staff care for a diverse population that ranges from lower income patients to businesspeople who work nearby. "This is a great educational model," says clinic director Joel Bessmer, MD. "It helps our residents learn the ambulatory arena, and they are completely engaged in their clinic." The Turner Park model works because it provides the continuity that is necessary for effective resident education. Residents learn not only about patient care but also how to organize and run a practice.
