Health Care Students

Aging Interest Group

The Aging Interest Group (AIG), at the University of Nebraska Medical Center was established in the fall of 2001.  It is a student ran organization open to all disciplines that are interested in working with older adults, learning about careers in geriatric medicine and issues involved with aging and are committed to enhancing their experience as people as well as potential health care providers.

Activities include, but not limited to, guest speakers on careers in geriatrics, summer in geriatrics, photo documentary on the elderly, and an end of year party.   This is an opportunity to meet and work closely with committed health care providers in the field.  Current disciplines involved in the AIG include medicine, physical therapy, nursing, pharmacy, physician assistants and social work (UNO).

During the year the organization has 3 large group meetings on different topics related to geriatrics and the elderly, which everyone is invited to attend and lunch is provided at these large group sessions.
  • This year our first large group topic was given by Dr. Edward Vandenberg from the Section of Geriatrics on “Why Consider a Career in Geriatrics?”
  • Our second large group for the year was a panel discussion with a pharmacist, gerontologist, physical therapist, nursing and social work talking about their disciplines experiences and lifestyles in geriatric medicine, with a case discussion and a question and answer period.
  • Our third large group will take place in March of 2009 and it will be on the topic of dementia given by Dr. Edward Vandenberg.
  • AIG is hosting a health fair on February 14th at New Cassel Retirement Center.
  • AIG also hosts a photo contest in February called “Images of Aging”
  • There will also be a luncheon held in April for the winners of our photo contest and the new and old executive committee members.

The AIG has an executive committee which consists of one or two students from each discipline who meet once a month over the lunch hour to discuss things they have done and things they are looking forward to doing.

The Executive Committee positions are student elected and any discipline is invited to seek a position on the committee.  AIG runs on an academic year basis.  Students are invited to attend one event or as many as they want. If a student has any questions or is interested in signing up, they may contact:
