Division of Infectious Diseases
The Infectious Diseases Division of the Department of Internal Medicine engages in a broad range of patient care, research, and educational activities. The division is comprised of 10 full-time faculty and has numerous close associations with other clinical and basic science departments. Patient care and consultation is available both for hospitalized and ambulatory patients in all areas of infectious disease. Specialized services and expertise are offered areas such as HIV, solid organ transplant, oncology, orthopedic infections, and travel medicine. The division takes its role in education seriously and is actively engaged in the training of healthcare workers and scientists including fellows, residents, medical students, basic science investigators, and trainees of many other types. Research programs in the division are diverse and range from clinical to basic pathogenesis. Affiliations with Pathology, Microbiology, and other basic science departments provide opportunities for research collaboration.
In addition to the General Infectious Diseases service, we offer a number of specialized programs:
- Transplant ID
- Infection is a leading complication in patients who receive solid organ transplants. We have faculty who specialize in this area and are involved with preventing and treating transplant-related infections.
- HIV/AIDS
- Specialized care of HIV/AIDS patients is offered through a comprehensive clinical program at the Specialty Care Clinic.
- Healthcare Epidemiology
- Healthcare epidemiology and infection prevention direction is provided to The Nebraska Medical Center by the division. An active Antimicrobial Stewardship Program is also in place and directed by members of the division.
- Orthopedic ID
- Bone and Joint infections create unique situations requiring specialized and collaborative care, and UNMC has one of the few Orthopedic ID programs in the country.
- Biopreparedness
- Infectious Diseases also is involved in a bioterrorism research and preparedness program. Medical direction is provided for the hospital’s Biocontainment unit, one of only three such facilities in the United States.
- Leukemia/Bone Marrow Transplant ID
- Specialized care in close collaboration with our highly respected oncology department is provided for this class of immunocompromised patients.
