Department of Internal Medicine Research

Vision for Research in the Department of Internal Medicine:

To continue the growth and national recognition of research in the Department of Internal Medicine.

We desire to be recognized by our colleagues across the nation as well as the people of Nebraska as leaders in research activities as driven by the specific interests of our faculty. Our vision also includes maintaining our current high quality clinical care and educational status.

Our research activities help us appropriately train students and house staff to be prepared for the many challenges they will encounter during their careers. We define our research activities broadly because of the multiple needs of our patients and students as well as our community. Our research includes quantitative and qualitative investigations of health and disease which address basic science mechanisms of disease, the development of new diagnostic and therapeutic strategies, the assessment of outcomes of new and existing health practices including economic and human costs as well as the assessment of educational strategies. The Department of Internal Medicine has an active research enterprise. Investigators are involved in both clinical and basic science research. Study areas vary within each section.

The Sections of Internal Medicine include: Cardiology; Dermatology; Diabetes, Endocrinology, and Metabolism; Gastroenterology and Hepatology; General Internal Medicine; Geriatrics and Gerontology; Infectious Diseases; Nephrology; Oncology and Hematology; Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine; and Rheumatology and Immunology. Sections each have are individual representation on the Department's Internal Medicine Research Council.
