Breast Cancer

The breast cancer program at the University of Nebraska offers comprehensive, expert care for all patients with any stage of breast cancer. The members of the team include dedicated breast radiographers, breast pathologists, breast surgeons and medical and radiation oncologists that specialize in breast cancer. In addition our nurse coordinators specialize in breast cancer allowing in-depth knowledge for optimal patient education and control of symptoms specific to the treatment of breast cancer. This multi-disciplinary expert specialization offers all patients coordinated care incorporating the best treatment of the day and often treatment that will come to be recognized as a standard for the future.

All standard treatments and many investigational treatment options are available to patients. All faculty of the UNMC Division of Oncology/Hematology have appointments in the Eppley Cancer Center, a NCI-designated cancer center that is directed by Dr. Kenneth Cowan. Dr. Cowan is also one of the two medical oncologists that exclusively treats breast cancer and is able to bring exciting bench research to the breast clinic patient. The second breast medical oncologist, Dr. Elizabeth Reed, is a member of the National Comprehensive Cancer Network (NCCN) breast committee that writes guidelines for the treatment of breast cancer. These guidelines are accepted nationally and internationally as the standard of care for breast cancer. The breast oncology physicians offer clinical trials as members of CALGB (Cancer and Leukemia Group B) and RTOG (Radiation Therapy Oncology Group), large cooperative clinical trial groups funded by the National Cancer Institute. These physicians also conduct their own phase I and II trials that originate at UNMC.

Patients may be evaluated and treated for breast cancer on the main, mid-town, UNMC campus in the Peggy D. Cowdery Patient Care Center with inpatient services and radiation therapy in nearby locations. Alternatively, the new outpatient Village Pointe Cancer Center in west Omaha offers all medical oncology services including chemotherapy and radiation therapy at a single convenient location.
