Dr. Michaud serves as co-director of the National Data Bank for Rheumatic Diseases (NDB), the largest long-term open-cohort observational study of its kind with over 36,000 patients enrolled. Since 2007 he has been the principal investigator of the RAIN database composed of several rheumatology clinics in the Rheumatoid Arthritis Investigator’s Network, and he has also worked closely with Dr. Ted Mikuls on the Veteran Affairs Rheumatoid Arthritis (VARA) registry. Most recently he co-founded the Arthritis Internet Registry with Robert Plenge, the Arthritis Foundation and Quest Diagnostics. In 2001 Dr. Michaud teamed up with Frederick Wolfe and the NDB and changed research fields from physics to epidemiology. Since then his primary interests revolve around pharmacoepidemiology, health outcomes, quality of life and cost-effectiveness in rheumatology. Some of his current projects include: cost-effectiveness of total joint arthroplasty and biologic therapy in RA, mortality in rheumatic diseases and progression of disability. He receives funding from the AHRQ, NIH and Arthritis Foundation and is an active volunteer in the American College of Rheumatology.
