Title: Matt and Friend
Location: Falmouth, Jamaica
Submitted by Paul Paulman
Category: Faculty/Staff

Description:
"UNMC medical student Matt Brester has made a new friend at the Falmouth Clinic in Jamaica."

Title: Together
Location: Tijuana, Mexico
Submitted by Valerie Jackson
Category: Student/Resident

Description:
"I was so moved by the children who lived in the neighborhoods surrounding the house projects of my college group missions trip. I speak some Spanish, but most of our communication was through the eyes, which truly are windows to the soul. We played games and just sat together… spending time with a friend from another world, never to see each other again, but blessing each other for the moment."

Title: Worship of Goddess Durga
Location: Kansas City, Kansas
Submitted by Sinjan De
Category: Student Resident

Description:
"Durga is a goddess, worshipped with pomp and grandeur (as show in picture) in Calcutta, India. The idols depict goddess Durga in the center with her heirs Ganesh and Lakshmi to the left, and Saraswati and Kartik to her right. Durga protects people from evil. The celebrations are something that keeps me going for the next year."

Title: Golden Sunset
Location: Lake Zorinsky, Omaha, Nebraska
Submitted by Sinjan De
Category: Student/Resident

Description:
"The golden sunset, a symbol of serenity, reminds us of King Arthur "The old order changes, yielding place to the new." Here we know as the sun sets in Omaha, it dawns in my home place Calcutta. Surya (sun) temporarily reminds me of India and excise me that we can see the same sun simultaneously."

Title: Family Photo
Location: Barrio Santa Maria, Managua Nicaragua
Submitted by Wendy Begg
Category: Student/Resident

Description:
"We were saying goodbye to people we had met during our stay. We asked if we could take a picture. Suddenly, relatives came out of nowhere, bringing tattered, framed family photos. This picture captures for me the intimacy of the Nicaraguan family, and their ability to persevere and remain hopeful."

Title: Up A Tree
Location: Managua, Nicaragua
Submitted by Wendy Begg
Category: Student/Resident

Description:
"These children lived next door to the clinic we worked at, and every time we saw them, they raced out of their home to greet us and beg us to play with them for a few moments. They were just like all other children, laughing and teasing. But they had little food and didn't go to school. The stark differences between them and children here were overwhelming."

Title: Sampling German Cuisine
Location: Potsdam, Germany
Submitted by Beth Augustine
Category: Student/Resident

Description:
"I snapped this shot of two American friends when we were sampling the German brats at an outdoor fair in the old Potsdam part of Berlin. Guess you could say that it represents us "sinking our teeth into" the new culture and trying to savor every new experience."

Title: Hutong Kindergarten
Location: Beijing, China
Submitted by Ronda Stevens
Category: Faculty/Staff

Description:
"In Beijing, China, we visited a school as part of a tour of the old neighborhoods, the Hutongs. These kindergartners were being taught English. Note the boy in the McDonald's T-Shirt! Kids are kids, no matter their culture. He enjoyed showing us his creation to admire."

Title: Béisbol
Location: Managua, Nicaragua
Submitted by Bradley Ellis
Category: Student/Resident

Description:
"Steve Pergam was one of the first two UNMC students to go to Nicaragua over spring break for the vaccination and public health project done by UNMC each year. He is now a resident in New Mexico. This picture impressed me by how much fun Nicaraguan children can have with very little. Here they are playing baseball with only a tennis ball."

Title: Adios Amigos
Location: Managua, Nicaragua
Submitted by Bradley Ellis
Category: Student/Resident

Description:
"I was part of a group of UNMC students and faculty who went to Nicaragua in March, 2001 for a vaccination and public health project. The children in the barrio we visited on our first day loved to play and have their pictures taken. They are telling us goodbye in this picture."

Title: Reflections
Location: alla Carraia bridge in Florence, Italy
Submitted by Beth Augustine
Category: Student/Resident

Description:
"This is one of my favorite pictures from touring Europe because it captures the beauty of Florence and the Tuscany region. I took this photo on Easter Sunday and it seemed to capture the religion (the domed church) and tranquility that was a part of the Italian way of life."

Title: Market place
Location: A small village in Guinée, West Africa
Submitted by Marc Tompkins
Category: Student/Resident

Description:
"The colors flood your eyeballs, particularly with the crowds of market day."

Title: (untitled)
Location: Santiago, Dominican Republic
Submitted by Jessica Bracken
Category: Student/Resident

Description:
"It is very common in their society to have the children working to earn money for the family. It is obvious this boy should be in school, yet he spends his day shining shoes. It's a powerful image of the wealthy, overweight United Statesan next to the thin, dirty clothed young boy using his shoes as knee pads."

Title: Neonatal Unit at Kilimanjaro Christian Medical Center
Location: Tanzania
Submitted by Betsy Buschkemper
Category: Faculty/Staff

Description:
"The abiding love and dedication that nurses share in caring for their patients the world over, never ceases to amaze me. This nurse's salary is less than fifty dollars a month, but her tender, persistent efforts to nurture and sustain this very sick infant were priceless."

Title: The Net
Location: Omaha, Nebraska
Submitted by Ronald Shikiya
Category: Student/Resident

Description:
"This picture was taken around Halloween at ESL class. The game here is called The Web, where we formed a circle and played with a ball of wool. The idea of the game is that the one that has the ball has to tell their scariest experience in his life. When that person is done, he has to toss the ball to another person. As the game goes on, you can see, the web is formed by the thread. This is one of the many games used as an incentive for people to talk and therefore practice English. This pic represents a blend of cultures occurring right here at UNMC. At this game we had people from America, Taiwan, Japan, China, Korea, Vietnam, and Peru."

Title: The Last Supper
Location: Madison, Wisconsin
Submitted by Ronald Shikiya
Category: Student/Resident

Description:
"This picture was taken at a Pharmaceutical Meeting held this year at Madison, WI. The people present in this pic are graduate students and a post doc at College of Pharmacy; we were having dinner after a long day of talks and poster presentations. Here we have people from India, Russia, America, and Peru."
