REPORTS FROM THE FIELD
UNMC Students Spend Summer in Central America
Colene Andersen,
now a second-year medical student at UNMC, spent seven weeks this summer in Central
America. In June she participated in UNMC's
Medical Spanish/International Health Course, offered for the
first time in Antigua, Guatemala. From Guatemala, she journeyed on to Nicaragua, where she
volunteered during the month of July at Los Chavalitos maternal child health clinic
in Managua. Andersen sent periodic reports of her impressions and experiences back to
UNMC, where they were published in UNMC Today.
Andersen was not alone during her trips. Participating with her in the Medical
Spanish/International Health Course in Guatemala were Sarah Hurd, Eric Eisenman, Joseph
Simodynes, James Seberger, Andrea Rasmussen, Lindy Foxhoven, Krista Hill, Wendy Begg,
Kristen Moore, and Libby Birch. Joining Andersen in Nicaragua were Begg and Seberger. As
these three were on their way to Nicaragua, eight more students arrived in Guatemala for
four weeks of training in Medical Spanish/International Health. Participating in the July
course were UNMC students Carla Mundt, Steve Schadendorf, Kari Simmons, Tina Flores, J.
Huebert, Michelle Jurgensen, and Brett Hill. Steven Getz, medical student from Wake Forest
University, also enrolled in the UNMC course.
