RUG 2009 Sessions

Dr. Jessica Mercer, Editorial Grants Associate, “Writing Your Best NIH Proposal” on Thursday, December 16th OR Friday, December 17th in DRC 1004 from 10:00 - 11:00 a.m. Jessica has been reviewing grants for UNMC faculty members since March and has helped many researchers obtain NIH funding. Her talk will teach grantsmanship skills and explain what to include in each section of an NIH proposal. “I will show many excerpts from proposals written by UNMC researchers. Looking at real examples is one of the best ways to learn exactly how to write each section,” she says. This talk is intended for anyone who wants to refine their grant writing skills, improve their application scores, or learn how to organize the shortened format of an NIH proposal. Jessica’s presentation style is engaging and interactive, so be prepared to speak up and ask questions. All interested graduate students, researchers, faculty, grant administrators, and support staff are invited. Faculty and staff can register online using your University personnel number. Database Design for Research Projects – 11/30/10 from 2-3 p.m. in DRC1004 - Tom Reardon and Kim Laursen from ITS will present "Designing a Database for Research" - Lecture/demo session introducing the principles of relational database design, terminology and practical considerations in achieving a good design. See examples of designs to avoid and how to re-design for effective research and statistical analysis.

Searching Web of Science – 12/9/10 from 2-3 p.m. DRC 1004. Brian Erb from McGoogan Library will give a demonstration showing how to explore the world’s leading citation database with multidisciplinary coverage of over 10,000 high-impact journals in the sciences, social sciences, and arts and humanities, as well as international proceedings coverage for over 120,000 conferences. Powerful tools include cited reference searching, Citation Maps, and the Analyze Tool. One of its useful features that PubMed won't allow is citation searching, that is you can find who cited whom so long as the cited and citing work are in Web of Science. Recording of session. An Overview of ADIS (Academic Department Information System) - Presented by Galen Kathol - 10/27/10 from 1-2 p.m. Bennett Hall 2020. ADIS is a database system that collects data from several internal systems into one central location. One of the benefits of ADIS is to help you manage and monitor your research activities.
