Identity Management

What is Identity Management to me??

Your online identity consists of your UNMC NetID and password.

Identity Management (or IDM for techies) consists of the procedures and systems that ensure you can access all the online resources while you're a UNMC faculty, staff member; or enrolled student.

Our goal is to establish a single identity that lets you interact with any of the services that UNMC offers. You might be in your email, working on a course in Blackboard, working on a grant, using a computer in a student lab, our using the campus wireless network.  When you start a new job, or classes - or when any of your roles go away - we need to keep track of that as well.

One way that we try to reduce the number of log-ins and passwords that you have to know is by forming relationships with partner organizations (like EDUCAUSE, NIH, or the NSF), using Shibboleth through the InCommon Federation, so that you can use your UNMC log-in and password to access resources that they provide. It makes life easier for these external agencies because they can just trust that someone from UNMC is a real person, and it makes life a lot more convenient for you.

UNMC applied for InCommon Federation membership in August 2012.
