How do I search a database? The library has developed a series of tutorials and guides for searching the frequently used databases. Call or email the library with questions. You can also request individual or group instruction in person or via telephone. Contact Heather Brown (hlbrown@unmc.edu or 402-559-7097) to schedule time. How do I get copies of articles?Online accessIf the full-text article isn’t directly linked within a database, check the Helix Library Catalog. It contains links to all journals that are available online, along with any passwords and instructions that may be required for access. A few online journals are only available while on-campus. This is due to restrictions placed by the publisher. A list of these on-campus only journals is available. Print accessThe Interlibrary Loan office can provide photocopies of journal articles and book chapters in the library’s collection. These titles can be found in Helix and can be ordered via the ILL/photocopy request form. UNMC enrolled students receive 50 free articles (from the library collection or obtained from another library) per year (July-June). Students, whose Center for Continuing Education coursework results in a UNMC degree, are charged $3 per article in the library's collection. Fax and rush services are available for an additional fee. Articles from journals the library doesn’t ownArticles and chapters from journals and books not owned by the library can be ordered from other libraries. UNMC enrolled students receive 50 free articles (from the library collection or obtained from another library) per year (July-June). Students, whose Center for Continuing Education coursework results in a UNMC degree, are charged $9 per article. To make a request, fill out the request form. Any questions can be directed to the Interlibrary Loan office. Please plan ahead, as it may take up to a week or more for the article to reach you. Fax and rush services are available for an additional fee. Can I check out books?McGoogan Library collectionStudents can borrow non-reference books listed in Helix. Requests can be made via the interlibrary loan request form. Books are mailed at a cost of $3 per book. This fee covers processing and shipping. The borrower is responsible for return shipping. Insuring the package is suggested, for if it is lost in the mail, the borrower is responsible for replacement. The library provides access to collections of electronic books. The collections contain primarily medical textbooks, but pharmacy and the basic science titles are also available. Other health sciences related electronic books, which are freely available on the Internet, are linked to within the Helix Catalog. Books not owned by McGooganThe library can borrow books from other libraries through interlibrary loan; however, you must present yourself to the library to check out the book. If you are unable to come to the library, you can order copies of individual chapters from a book. The number of chapters copied per book may be restricted due to copyright. These books or chapters are included in the annual 50 free. Can I use libraries located near me?Most libraries are open to the public. Services available to you in these libraries may vary. When in doubt, contact that library. Remember, the McGoogan Library is your library and we will do our best to help you find and obtain the information that you need. Find a library:
