1. Searching the Internet

  • Tips for searching the Internet
    This page will give you some general tips and guidelines for searching online. Use these tips to learn how to search more quickly and accurately.
  • Search Engines
    This page lists and links to general search engines (such as Yahoo! and Altavista); specialized medical search engines (like Hardin MD and MedlinePlus); and meta search engines for searching multiple engines at a time.

2. Evaluating and Citing Web Resources

  • How to evaluate a web site
    This checklist is adapted from the Health on the Net Code of Conduct. Health on the Net is an international foundation dedicated to recognizing quality health information on the Internet.
  • APA Style Electronic Formats
    This page from Dr. Mary Ellen Guffey includes examples on how to cite web sites, specific documents from within a web site, and creating references for articles contained within electronic databases.

3. Locating Clinical Guidelines

  • Practice Guidelines
    This guide from McGoogan Library will point you to various locations on the Internet and available from the Library reference area that index and archive clinical practice guidelines.

4. Locating Journal Articles

Sometimes the Internet cannot provide all of the scientific information you need. For those times when you need more scholarly resources, try some of the following databases available from the McGoogan Library of Medicine. MEDLINE
is the index for medical journal literature. While you will find 300+ nursing journals indexed here, the focus is primarily on biomedicine.

CINAHL
short for Cumulative Index to Nursing and Allied Health Literature, CINAHL indexes over 500 nursing journals and other sources of information. CINAHL also includes allied health, consumer health, and alternative therapy journals not included in MEDLINE.

PsycINFO
Provides indexing and abstracts for over one million articles in 1,500 journals from over 50 countries. This database, provided by the American Psychological Association, also includes abstracts for dissertations, books and book chapters ranging in date from 1887 to the present.

MICROMEDEX®
Drug and patient information, including drug evaluations, patient education leaflets, and evidence-based herbal and dietary information.
