Searching for the Evidence
What To Do When your Boss Sends You to the Library
PubMed Basics
This course will provide an introduction to searching for peer-reviewed
journal articles and other evidence-based material using the PubMed interface
of Medline. Topics will include construction of searches and location of
articles through McGoogan Library.
Advanced PubMed
Ever wanted to easily limit your MEDLINE search to case reports or biographies? Need to search for all neurologic effects of a drug, but don’t want to type the name of every neurologic disease and symptom in your MEDLINE search statement? Ever needed to find articles by authors living in Nebraska but not every article that mentions Nebraska? Learn these skills and more in our Advanced PubMed class. The class will cover 1) finding and using the Medical Subject Headings to search PubMed effectively; 2) using field tags to search by author’s name, author affiliation and title keywords; 3) using Preview/Index to limit a search to an unusual set of publication types or set of publication languages; 4) using saved searches to conveniently limit your search to items available at UNMC or systematic reviews and meta-analyses. This class, taught by Cindy Schmidt M.D., M.L.S. (cmschmidt@unmc.edu, 9-7077), is intended for individuals who have already used MEDLINE and wish to strengthen their searching skills.

Nursing Resources available through McGoogan Library
Looking for nursing literature, but not sure where to start? Come to this hands-on session highlighting the online nursing resources available through the Library. We will look at unique features of CINAHL and Medline, explore online journal access, and investigate other full-text resources.
PubMed Essentials
PubMed Essentials is an introduction to PubMed searching and features. By properly using keywords, wildcards, Boolean operators, and limits, you can increase the likelihood of meaningful results. Additional topics covered: how to search “Related Articles;” what the various full-text buttons represent; and how to save your search results. This class is suitable for PubMed beginners and regular users.
Personalizing PubMed
Make PubMed your own with the new tool My NCBI. In this course, you will learn how to set up an account, save searches, create email alerts, and create custom filters. Previous knowledge of PubMed searching is highly recommended.
Start your research @ your McGoogan Library
New to campus? Or in a new job that involves looking up information through the Library? We offer a library orientation session the first Tuesday of each month at 1:30 pm. All new or interested faculty, staff, and researchers are welcome to attend this orientation, which includes a tour of virtual and real library resources, and outlines services that the library offers to everyone that works at UNMC.
Searching for the Evidence
Learn how to effectively locate, identify, and access the best evidence
in the primary medical literature. We will explore PubMed, FIRSTConsult, ACP
Pier, Cochrane, and other full-text resources.
What to do when your boss sends you to the library?
Has your boss ever handed you journal citations or asked you to get materials from the library? Don’t know what to do? This crash course in library essentials will give you the basics in locating journals and books, requesting materials from other libraries, and where to go in the library regarding various requests.
SciFinder Plus: Finding Commerical Sources
for Chemicals and Drugs, Chemical Reactions and Chemcial/Drug Literature
using SciFinder
Plus
Attendees will use SciFinder's search feature to locate a CAS Registry record
for a chemical or drug. After finding structural information, basic properties
and alternate names in the CAS Registry database, we will use links from
the Registry record to the CHEMCATS AND CHEMLIST databases to find commercial
sources, prices and regulatory information. Links to the CASREACT database
will be used to locate reactions that include the drug or chemical of interest.
Finally, the linked CAPlus and MEDLINE databases will be used to find literature
of interest as well as literature citing the relevant literature. If time
permits, we may also use SciFinder's drawing features to locate chemicals
with structures entered by attendees. Classes are open to all UNMC faculty,
staff, and students. Pre-registration is required, using the Library Class
Registration page. Please
e-mail Cindy Schmidt at
cmschmidt@unmc.edu if you would like to arrange one-on-one SciFinder instruction
or to set up additional classroom training sessions.
