Go Local Nebraska Selectors
The focus of the Go Local Nebraska project is to develop a web database of local health information services and providers throughout Nebraska. Go Local Nebraska is a cooperative initiative with the National Library of Medicine (NLM), part of the National Institutes of Health, the McGoogan Library of Medicine at the University of Nebraska Medical Center, and the Nebraska Library Commission. The web-based database is hosted from the National Library of Medicine’s consumer health web site, MedlinePlus http://medlineplus.gov which allows consumers to locate health related information on over 740 health topics, search an illustrated medical encyclopedia, locate information about drugs, peruse interactive patient tutorials, and discover the latest health news.
Go Local Nebraska selectors are recognized as partners with the McGoogan Library of Medicine/University of Nebraska Medical Center. Their participation ensures the health services and providers in Nebraska communities are listed accurately. Also, selector involvement promotes communication between the local Public Library and health care providers in Nebraska communities.
Selectors are trained by the Go Local Nebraska team and have print and electronic training materials at their disposal. They are also given promotional materials to distribute in their library and community.
Responsibilities of a selector are as follows:
- Look at the entries for your community comparing the address and phone number against the local phone book
- Provide missing information or corrections to the Go Local Nebraska team
- Create new records for services or providers not listed in the Go Local database
- Contact local hospital or clinic to ensure information provided is accurate and up to date using a script developed by the Go Local Nebraska team
Selectors receive the following:
- A gift certificate to Amazon.com to purchase materials for their library
- Framed certificate indicating their partnership with the McGoogan Library
- CE Credit for the training they received
- A write-up about the project and their involvement to submit to their local newspaper
Selectors maintain a record of the following:
- Number of changes or corrections made
- Number of new additions
- Personal contacts made to local health care providers and services
- Number of hours spent on the project.
