Library Resources from UNMC and UNO


UNMC Library The McGoogan Library of Medicine houses a growing collection of information in traditional and non-traditional formats ranging from the visual to the electronic. The Library currently subscribes to more than 800 of the world's most influential biomedical journals including over 3,000 in electronic form, and maintains a collection of approximately 230,000 volumes. Various biomedical and health topics are covered in this library. Emphases are placed in the areas of medicine, nursing, pharmacy, allied health, and the graduate programs at UNMC. There is also a consumer health collection, called CHIRS, which contains books and journals on a variety of health topics.

UNO Library The University library offers a general academic collection of more than 750,000 volumes, over 3,000 journal and newspaper subscriptions, nearly 2 million microforms, media in various formats, a large collection of government documents, and nearly 100 electronic indexes and databases. The award-winning Research Wizard provides a customized list of Library and Internet resources appropriate for a general topic area or for a specific course. Areas of the collection that may be of particular interest to students in the Master of Public Health Program include education, public administration and policy, business and economics, and gerontology.

Accessing online resources

Resources accessible through UNMC require a current UNMC ID and Password for remote access. All of these resources may be accessed without a password at the McGoogan Library of Medicine using the computers available by the Reference desk on the 6th floor or using the 8th floor computer cluster.

Resources accessible through UNO require a current UNO Library account & UNO Library barcode to access electronic resources remotely. All of these resources may be accessed without a password at the University Library using the public access computers available on the main floor of the library.

UNO Research Wizard will link you to library and Internet resources on a variety of subjects including "Public Health".

UNMC Electronic Journal Finder will link you to all of McGoogan's current print and electronic journals. You may search by a specific journal title or browse through the alphabetical list.

UNO Locate Journals will link you to searchable, browsable lists showing where journals are available full text.

Electronic Reserves (ERes) will link you to articles that may be required readings. Your instructor will provide you with the necessary password for access.

Statistical Resources page provides links to many publically-accessible, statistical resources.

Government Resources page provides links to websites about, or provided by, the state or federal government.


Searching for journal articles

Each library provides access to a variety of online databases that index journal articles. The following databases are listed to guide you to the appropriate databases that addresses your information needs.
  • ABI Inform - covers business topics including management, finance, accounting, human resources, public administration; some full text and full image.

  • Academic Search Premier - broad coverage of most academic areas including business, social sciences, humanities, general academic, general science, education, and multi-cultural; some full text; links to UNO catalog.

  • CINAHL - covers mainly topics in and from the perspective of nursing, allied health disciplines, consumer health, and health services administration literature. Public health literature is represented within the indexed journals. To limit results to articles with a public health angle, choose “Public Health” in either the Journal Subset or Special Interest limit fields. Search this database to find a comprehensive listing of articles from the nursing and allied health literature.

  • Congressional Universe - Congressional working papers and bills, federal regulations and statutes, Congressional Record. UNO
  • Contemporary Women's Issues - covers social sciences, business, humanities, medicine, popular culture, science, education, women's rights and technology; some full text.

  • ERIC - covers all aspects of education, including the public health education of professionals and general public. Both professional magazines/journals and published/unpublished sources of educational materials are available.

  • Health Business Full-text Elite - for articles dealing with the administrative and managerial aspects of public health, this database provides full text access to more than 440 periodicals detailing all aspects of health care administration and other non-clinical aspects of health care institution management.

  • INFO Project - database that facilitates access to global, reproductive health information. The database includes records for relevant journal articles, committee reports, news articles, webpages, and multimedia items. Many records include links to freely available, full-text documents.

  • Lexis-Nexis Academic Universe - Includes news, business & finance, law, politics, medicine and more; primarily full text.

  • MEDLINE - covers a broad range of international journal literature in the fields of medicine, nursing, dentistry, veterinary medicine, and preclinical sciences. Public health articles can be found throughout these fields. Additionally, public health journals are well represented. MEDLINE is a good starting place for a comprehensive search of the medical and public health literature.

  • PAIS International - covers public & social policy, government, politics.

  • PsycINFO - citations and summaries of journal articles, book chapters, books, dissertations and technical reports, all in the field of psychology. Public health articles with a psychosocial perspective are available in this database.

  • Psychology and Behavioral Sciences Collection - full-text from nearly 550 full text publications, including more than 500 peer-reviewed journals in the field of psychology and behavioral science.

  • Psyc Articles - covers general psychology as well as applied, clinical, and theoretical research. Full text from 40 journals.

  • Social Services Abstracts - covers social services, broadly defined: community and mental health services, family welfare, gerontology, homelessness and poverty, health policy, social work education and practice, social welfare policy, support groups and networks, addiction, violence, abuse, and neglect.

  • Sociological Abstracts - includes research in sociology and related disciplines in the social and behavioral sciences.

  • Web of Science - includes 1990 - present records from Science Citation Index, Social Sciencs Citation Index and Arts & Humanities Citation Index . Topical and cited reference searches can be performed.

Searching online textbooks

A listing of biomedical online textbook at UNMC can be found via Helix. Click the “Limit/Sort Search button” at the top of the results screen and choose “World Wide Web” in the “WHERE Item is located” field.

Access clinical and basic science testbooks through the STAT!Ref, AccessMedicine, and MD Consult collections.
