When EBSCOhost’s Direct Export to RefWorks doesn't Work

The TwoTypes of EBSCOhost Direct Export Failures
The Work-Arounds

The TwoTypes of EBSCOhost Direct Export Failures

  • When direct export fails, the user is usually greeted by a static "Export Manager" page; clicking on "Direct Export to RefWorks" and then the "Save" button doesn't produce a switch to RefWorks. When this type of failure occurs, it’s worth trying work-around 1 (described below). Work-around 2 should work also. Work-around 3 will only work if your EBSCOhost folder contains records from a single database.
  •

  • On occasion, usually late at night, a message will appear telling you that EBSCOhost’s Direct Export function is unavailable. When this type of direct export failure occurs, try work-arounds 2 or 3 (described below). Work-around 3 will only work if your EBSCOhost folder contains records from a single database.

The Work-Arounds

Work-Around 1

  1. Close all the internet browser windows that you have open.
  2. Re-start the internet browser.
  3. Click on your browser's history icon. This usually looks like a clock face with a curvy green arrow at the periphery of the clock face.
  4. Your browsing history will appear on the left-hand side of the screen.
  5. Check the "View" drop-down menu to make sure you're viewing links in "by order visited today"
  6. Click on the top "EBSCOhost" link in your history
  7. If you are working off-campus, you may have to sign-in with your lotusnotes username and password again.
  8. You should see the EBSCOhost "Export Manager" page. If not, navigate to the "Export manager" page.
  9. Click on the "Direct Export to RefWorks" radiobutton.
  10. Make sure pop-ups are not blocked.
  11. Click on the "Save" Button.
  12. If this approach works and your'e using Internet Explorer, a pop-up window will appear. If you are off-campus, you may be asked to enter UNMC's group code.
  13. You will be asked to sign-in to your RefWorks account.
  14. The references should be import successfully.

Work-Around 2: Save your records in a "My EBSCOhost" account and direct export later.

  1. Click on the " Sign In" link at the upper left-hand side of the page.
  2. If you don't have an EBSCOhost account you will still need to click on "Sign In", but after you reach the "sign in" page, you will need to click on the " I'm a new user" link that is located under the "Sign In" tab and register according to the instructions provided.
  3. Once you've signed into an account your current folder contents will be saved in your folder along with any former "My EBSCOhost" folder contents.
  4. Later, when EBSCOhost direct export will hopefully be working again, return to any EBSCOhost database.
  5. Sign into My EBSCOhost using the link that appears at the upper left-hand side of the page.
  6. Click on the "Folder has items" link.
  7. Try Direct Export again.

Work-Around 3

  1. If you have gathered records from a single database, you can choose the "Citations in a format that can be uploaded to bibliographic management software" and save the records that appear as a .txt file (be sure to switch from the .html format to .txt before saving the file!). You can then use the import function within RefWorks to import the records.
  2. Log into your RefWorks account.
  3. Use the "References" menu to select "Import."
  4. From the "Import Filter/Data Source" menu, select "EBSCOhost."
  5. From the "Database" menu, select the appropriate database.
  6. Click on the "Browse" button and then select and open the .txt file you have saved.
  7. Click on the "Import" button.
