MISSION
Our mission is to maintain thorough, accurate and timely bibliographic identification of all items in the collection and to provide an effective means of accessing these records through standard cataloging and classification schemes and local practices.

LOCATION/HOURS
We are located on the 8th floor of the McGoogan Library of Medicine, in the Library Resources and Technical Services Department. Help is available Monday through Friday, 7:30 to 5:00.

FUNCTION
The Materials Processing Department is responsible for the cataloging and processing of all library materials. Staff creates descriptive cataloging records and classify print and non-print materials acquired for the McGoogan Library collection, as well as for many of the UNMC departmental libraries.

McGoogan Library follows established cataloging rules, as set forth in the Anglo-American Cataloging Rules (AACR2R). The subject headings used in cataloging are from the Medical Subject Headings (MeSH), NLM’s controlled vocabulary. Medical titles generally are classified according to NLM’s classification scheme. For titles in fields peripheral to medicine, the Library of Congress classification schedules are used in full.

The Materials Processing department maintains the records for the printed journal collection, providing access through Helix and SERLINE, the NLM serials holdings database. We also bind journals, books and theses.

We welcome the opportunity to catalog UNMC departmental libraries into Helix, the library’s online catalog. This will not only provide exposure across the wide range of users we serve, but will also allow for the preparation of title lists for accreditation review.
