Metal and Plastic

Virtually all metal and plastic products on campus can be recycled by placing both metal and plastic items in the same (co-mingled) GREEN bins or carts.

All rigid (hard plastic, holds a shape) can be recycled, regardless of the number printed on it.  It does not need to have a number stamped on it as long as it is rigid plastic.  Plastic products that can be recycled include but are not limited to: plastic cups, lids, bottles, caps, straws, utensils, frozen food trays, to-go containers, yogurt/pudding/fruit cups, lotion & soap containers.

Plastic from labs may be recycled as long as they are empty/reasonably clean and free of hazards.  Any plastics that have contained biohazardous materials must be placed in the red biohazard bins.

Please remove excess liquid and food from plastic containers before placing the items in the green bin. There is NO need to thoroughly rinse or scrub items clean. A small amount of liquid or food residue remaining is fine.

Chip bags, plastic bags (even if they are #1-7), plastic wrap (saran wrap or cellophane), Styrofoam, and glass are NOT accepted for recycling here; all of these items must be transported off campus for recycling or thrown in the trash.  The black plates and to-go containers provided by the cafeteria are Styrofoam, not plastic.

Metal products that can be recycled include but are not limited to: aluminum cans, steel cans (most often from soup, fruits, veggies, or coffee), metal shipping containers, and small scrap metal.  Aluminum foil is recyclable, but cannot be accepted in these containers.  Large metal items can be recycled as well.  Please contact LiveGreen for help with large items and aluminum foil.
