L-abs....

Laboratories in SNF/NF and in Home Health.
All skilled nursing facilities must have an indication for the lab in order to bill third-party payers.  To avoid annoying callbacks to get the diagnosis, simply put the diagnoses in parentheses behind the lab order. Avoid writing for lab orders on Fridays or weekends unless absolutely necessary. This prevents labs coming back to cross cover people who may not know the patient or have time to deal with it, and allows the attending HCP to directly deal with abnormal labs.  Give the facility or HHC agency leeway on a specific day to draw the labs, unless specifically necessary. Always designate where to direct the results. An example of a good order, is the following. "CBC and BMP (anemia, HTN) in 5-7 days, call results to patient's HCP".
