A decade of excellence
Since
1995, the University of Nebraska Medical Center has
presented Mini-Medical School, demonstrating its commitment to bring
the citizens of Nebraska the most up-to-date information on
research and treatment on a myriad of health topics.
UNMC experts have described, detailed and discussed with you the
fundamentals and the research breakthroughs in the areas of cancer,
aging, cardiology, genetics and the brain, to name just a few. Four
years later, we tapped into our telecommunications technology to
broadcast the program to Nebraskans from Omaha to Scottsbluff.
Initially, six Nebraska communities signed on to be host sites.
To celebrate a Decade of Excellence, we brought back three of our
most popular topics – genetics, cardiology and the brain.
October 6: A Decade
Makes a Difference

 A Decade Makes a Difference
Harold M. Maurer, M.D.
Chancellor, UNMC
This celebration gives us an opportunity to reflect on where medical
research has taken us. We’ve discovered that there is not one
treatment for cancer, but many. And many innovative treatments have
been developed. |

 Exploring the Genetic Blueprint
Bruce Buehler, M.D.
Director, Munroe-Meyer Institute, UNMC
We’ve watched the world of genetics rapidly
evolve, particularly since the completion of the Human Genome
Project in 2003, through which 20,000-25,000 genes in human DNA were
identified. Researchers at UNMC are now targeting treatments for
certain diseases based on the genetic profile they exhibit. Early
diagnosis of disease is another benefit of this genetic map. Dr.
Buehler will share how this exciting world of genetics is benefiting
Nebraskans. |
October 13: Brainstorm of New Advances
We know the brain controls everything
the human body does. When diseases or disorders strike the brain,
the results can be devastating. UNMC Drs. Sanjay Singh, Pierre Fayad,
and Anuja Ghorpade will guide you through the complex issues
surrounding brain disorders. You’ll learn about what drugs have been
developed to fight diseases in the brain, and the latest in
research, prevention, diagnosis and treatment options that are
available for stroke, epilepsy, Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s
diseases.

October 20:
The Beat Goes On
We’ve learned that although heart disease has
remained the number one killer in the United States for more than a
century, we now know the causes and to a certain extent, the cures.
The field of cardiology has grown tremendously to meet the demands
of the disease. Through the years, tools and techniques for treating
heart disease have also evolved to meet the increased need. UNMC
Drs. John Windle, Thomas Porter and Irving Zucker will present
recent breakthroughs in research and treatment for the heart.
