First Line Defense:
The Immune System
Presented in fall 2001
Basic and
clinical researchers at UNMC are investigating the complexities of the
immune system. They have found that a defect in any part of the immune
system can leave the body defenseless, allowing a mild infection to turn
into a life-threatening situation.
These researchers
are exploring ways to boost the immune system to fight diseases, from
the common cold to cancer and AIDS. They are developing new therapies
for autoimmune diseases, such as rheumatoid arthritis, lupus and multiple
sclerosis.
