MIS Research Fellowship Position

WHAT UNMC OFFERS:

 

UNMC offers a one-year, paid Advanced Laparoscopic Research Fellowship.  The Fellowship starts on July 1 and is completed June 30.  The fellow will be expected to perform research in the areas of Foregut, Bariatrics, Robotics, Solid Organ and Colorectal surgical training.  Publication requirement will consist of 2 abstracts and 3 journal publications. This is not an ACGME accredited Fellowship.

 

There is limited exposure to clinical and surgical procedures, approximately 50 procedures will be completed.  Minimally Invasive operative techniques that will be learned include; Heller Myotomy, Nissen, Lap Gastric Bypass, adjustable Lap Banding, Lap Solid Organ, Lap Colon, Lap Common Bile Duct, Lap Esophagectomy, Lap Hernia Repair.  These techniques will be performed in the newly opening Minimally Invasive equipped operating rooms.  Salary is contingent upon level and experience based on graduate medical education parameters.  

 

The Research Fellow will also have the opportunity to participate and teach in the animate lab, performing Lap Colon and Lap Ventral Hernias.

 

RESEARCH FELLOW REQUIREMENTS: 

  • Participation in the department’s Journal Club – the 1st Wednesday of the month
  • Assist in instructing the six (6) General Surgery Resident MIS lab sessions
  • Assist the Administrator in organizing and setting up the laparoscopic trainer stations for the General Surgery MIS lab sessions
  • Assist in instructing outside surgeons during laparoscopic courses sponsored by UNMC.
  • Participation in clinical research.
  • Participation in all non-clinical research surgeries.
  • Publication requirement will consist of 4-5 abstracts and 5-10 journal publications.
  • Basic FLS certification must be obtained during the Fellowship year.
  • Participation in General Surgery Grand Rounds every Wednesday morning.

 

 APPLICATION CRITERIA: 

  • Passage of USMLE Steps 1, 2 and 3 or Equivalent.  Copy of Score Report required.
  • Valid US VISA/citizenship
  • Research experience desired.
  • For foreign medical graduates, you must have passed your ECFMG English Test to be considered for the fellowship.
