Appendix

Removing the Appendix Laparsocpically

The appendix produces a bacteria-destroying protein called immunoglobulins, which help fight infection in the body. Its function, however, is not essential. People who have had appendectomies (removal of the appendix) do no have an increased risk toward infection. Other organs in the body take over this function ne the appendix has been removed.

At the Nebraska Medical Center we have 3 Minimally Invasive trained surgeons: Dr. Dmitry Oleynikov, Dr. Corrigan McBride and Dr. Matthew Goede who perform appendectomies laparoscopically.

Please see the Nebraska Medical Center web site for more information on laparoscopic removal of an appendix.
