Laparoscopic Inguinial Hernia Repair
An Inguinal Hernia, a hernia that develops in the groin area, can be congenital or can develop after repeated straining and activity causing the muscles to tear or become weakened. When this happens the patient develops an inguinal hernia, and abdominal contents pass through the abdominal wall into the groin area. Symptoms such as pain and discomfort are common, and occasionally these hernias can be life threatening if your intestines become twisted, or strangulated, through the abdominal wall defect.
At the Nebraska Medical Center Dr.’s Dmitry Oleynikov, Corrigan McBride and Matthew Goede repair these hernias laparoscopically. Three small incisions are cut at and below the belly button. A mesh patch is used to close the hernia and reinforce the abdominal wall to prevent reoccurrence. Most patients are able to go home the same day this procedure is done.
Here is a video of an actual Inguinal Hernia repair performed by Dr. Oleynikov.
