ADHD

Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is a common neurobiological disorder that can impact a child’s ability to focus, sit still and control impulses. ADHD begins in childhood, but can persist into adolescence and adulthood. It can range from mild to severe, and typically affects all aspects of someone’s life. ADHD is usually responsive to proper treatment and medication and as children grow older, they often can learn to manage their ADHD symptoms. The University of Nebraska Medical Center's Munroe-Meyer Institute (MMI) ADHD Clinic uses state of the art information from behavioral, medical and educational research to diagnose, assess and recommend management strategies for children with ADHD.

Individual management plans to optimize developmental outcome are developed within the context of the child's family, community, and culture. Treatments provided may include behavioral counseling and referral and/or psychopharmacotherapy (medication) for behavior problems associated with specific disorders. For issues associated with ADHD, such as learning disabilities and severe behavior problems, families can be referred to other professionals throughout the MMI system. Our faculty and staff are well-known for their collaboration with teachers, other professionals and families. The coordination of a child’s treatment across the home, school and community settings is key to the success of MMI’s approach to treating ADHD.
