Occupational Therapists (OT) at MMI provide consultation, assessment, and intervention services to individuals with developmental disabilities, across the life span. Our primary focus is on supporting every client’s participation in meaningful occupations (i.e. activities of daily living that are important to that individual). Our services are provided in a variety of settings (homes, schools, clinical, and community based settings), according to the needs of the individual and his/her caregivers. The licensed professional staff consists of a director, registered occupational therapists, and certified occupational therapy assistants. Various members of the MMI OT staff have achieved specialty board certification in Pediatrics through AOTA; are certified as Assistive Technology Practitioners; and/or have received specialty training (certification) in Neuro-developmental Treatment (NDT), and the Sensory Integration and Praxis Tests (SIPT).

Our service commitments include:

  • Support to interdisciplinary clinics for children with cerebral palsy, midline birth defects, and neuromuscular diseases. We also support an adult clinic for MDA.
  • Seating and power mobility clinic (with Physical Therapy); as well as a team that does ongoing review of requests for specialized equipment across the state.
  • Outpatient medical therapy at MMI, including seasonal aquatic therapy (Starfish) and handwriting program.
  • Consultation to the NE Med Center NICU, and Liver/Small Bowel Transplant inpatient and out-patient teams.
  • Educationally related therapy to qualifying students in the Omaha Public Schools district, from age of identification to 21 yrs.

MMI OT’s provide clinical education opportunities, of varying lengths, to entry level occupational therapy students from the College of Saint Mary (MOT) and Creighton University (OTD). Students from other university programs may also apply to complete 12-13 week pediatric fieldwork requirements with our department. We also provide a variety of observation opportunities to students from other MMI disciplines and the University of Nebraska Medical Center (UNMC) College of Medicine.

OT faculty also teach portions of the pediatric curricula in the UNMC Physical Therapy Education, doctor of physical therapy program
