Individuals who might benefit from an upper limb orthotic device (commonly referred to as a hand, wrist, or elbow splint) might present with any or all of the following:
- muscle contractures that restrict movement
- range of motion limitations related to significant muscle weakness
- impaired arm and/or hand function
- skin breakdown caused by a fixed hand and/or wrist posture
The occupational therapist's evaluation will determine whether an appropriate splint can be ordered, or if a custom design will be needed to address therapeutic goals. All splints are carefully fit and adjusted to meet the unique needs of each client. Splint-wearing schedules are also individualized.
