UNMC/UNO MPH Program




Admissions Requirements


  1. Completion of the UNMC Graduate Studies application and the MPH addendum.


  2. Two official transcripts reflecting an earned Bachelor’s degree with 3.0 or higher grade point average for the last 60 undergraduate or the last 18 graduate credit hours completed.


  3. Three letters of recommendation from academic or professional references.


  4. A resume reflecting one or more years of work/volunteer history related to health and/or human services


  5. A one page personal statement describing the applicant’s:
    1. Interest in and potential for contributing to the field of public health
    2. Career objectives
    3. Self-assessment of the applicant's computer, quantitative analysis and personal skills and general preparation for succeeding in a program of graduate studies in public health.


  6. All international students are required to submit TOEFL and GRE scores.


  7. Biostatistics and Epidemiology Concentration Applicants must submit official Graduate Record Examination (GRE) scores taken within the last three years are required of all applicants. Arrangements to take the GRE may be made through the Educational Testing Service in Princeton, New Jersey. A waiver may be requested by domestic students who have successfully completed a prior graduate degree. The GRE scores will be assessed in combination with the other admission materials including prior coursework and work experience.


  8. Epidemiology Concentration Prerequisites: Prior mathematics and statistics courses and grades:


    1. The student must have received the equivalent of a B or above (3.00 or higher on the University of Nebraska grade scale) in a statistics course taken within 5 years of program application.
    2. In addition, college algebra, or a more advanced mathematics course, taken within the 5 years of program application with at least a B (or 3.00) grade is required.


  9. Biostatistics Concentration Prerequisites: Prior mathematics and statistics courses and grades:
    1. The student must have received the equivalent of at least a B (i.e. 3.00 or higher on the University of Nebraska grade scale) in a statistics course taken within 5 years of program application.
    2. In addition, differential and integral calculus as well as linear algebra, taken within the 10 years of program application with at least a B (i.e. 3.00 or higher on the University of Nebraska grade scale) grade is required.


  10. 10. Environmental and Occupational Health Prerequisites: Prior mathematics and science courses and grades:
    1. The student must have received the equivalent of at least a B (i.e. 3.00 or higher on University of Nebraska grade scale) in the following undergraduate college-level courses:
      1. 2 semesters of Biology
      2. 2 semesters of Chemistry
      3. 1 semester of Physics
      4. 1 semester of Calculus

  11. Admissions to the MPH program are limited to the number that can best be handled to the advantage of the students and program operations. Preference is given to residents of Nebraska, to individuals who wish to pursue study that can be adequately supported by MPH program resources, and to those who have adequate preparation and time for their proposed program.

  13. Applicants who wish to become candidates for advanced degrees must fulfill the general requirements of the Graduate College at the University of Nebraska Medical Center (UNMC) as well as the particular requirements of the MPH program.
