About Us

The University of Nebraska Medical Center, (UNMC) (Colleges of Medicine, Nursing, Pharmacy and School of Allied Health), the Nebraska Health Care Association (NHCA), and the Omaha Veterans Administration Medical Center (OVAMC) form the consortium for the Nebraska Geriatric Education Center (NEBGEC). Each brings strengths and resources to the project. Long standing relationships between partners, their proximity, and technologic connections facilitate cooperation.

The NEBGEC's mission is to improve the health care and health care outcomes of Nebraska's vulnerable older population residing in rural areas and nursing home, those with mental health problems, and minority older adults, through enhanced training of health care professionals in geriatrics.

Our goal is to reach rural providers and those that provide care for urban underserved populations. Our project has five objectives:

1. To increase effectiveness of geriatrics health care through training in rural and underserved urban areas using an 80-hour interdisciplinary mini-fellowship.
2. To improve the interest of health care professions students in geriatric health careers through early exposure to information on career opportunities, positive experiences with older people and interdisciplinary training.
3. To improve the health outcomes of older patients in rural areas by providing rural practitioners with geriatric interdisciplinary team training emphasizing evaluation of complex patients.
4. To improve the quality of care and patient outcomes for residents of nursing homes through interdisciplinary training of nursing home providers.
5. To improve the diversity and cultural competence of the health professions workforce.
