Utilizing statewide Nebraska hospital discharge data for the calendar years of 1995, 1996 and 1997, we describe the characteristics of inpatient hospitalizations which are uninsured - those which are not billed to public or private insurance carriers. These types of hospitalizations are referred to as "self-pay". We describe the number and type (DRG) of discharges which occur most frequently among the self-pay discharges, the average length of stay (ALOS) and average charges associated with each DRG.
