MULTIPLE SCLEROSIS

Mission: to create a world class Multiple Sclerosis Center, providing multidisciplinary care on a continuum focusing on the needs of people with Multiple Sclerosis.

Vision: is summarized as the “6 Cs” of Multiple Sclerosis care.

  1. Credible: evidence-based care
  2. Continuum: to provide care for every individual with MS across the age and stage continuum
  3. Competent: Fellowship-trained Director and MS certified providers and nurses
  4. Coordinated multidisciplinary care
  5. Continuity: assigning same provider to get to know individual and needs
  6. Continuing education for patients and families, medical, nursing and physician assistant students, residents and fellows to disseminate the knowledge about MS and its management

Program Overview:

This Program focuses on the diagnosis and treatment of Multiple Sclerosis and related demyelinating disorders. Areas of special expertise include early onset and adult Multiple Sclerosis, Neuromyelitis optica (NMO), Transverse Myelitis (TM), acute disseminated encephalomyelitis (ADEM), neurosarcoidosis, and neurological complications of connective tissue diseases, vasculitis and cancer.

Because the needs of those with multiple sclerosis are different and can include numerous symptoms, services including Neuro-Opthalmology, Neuroradiology, Neuropsychology, Neurosurgery, Occupational and Physical therapy, Physiatry, Psychiatry, Pain and Uro-Gynecology are available providing comprehensive, state-of-the-art, multidisciplinary care for people with Multiple Sclerosis and related demyelinating disorders.

In collaboration with the dystonia and spasticity clinic, we provide a full complement of treatments for spasticity, including Botulinum toxin injections and intrathecal baclofen pump therapy. We also have a state-of-the-at infusion center with specialty trained nurses in infusion of biologics and chemotherapy.

If the diagnosis of MS is confirmed it can be somewhat overwhelming initially but in general, with appropriate treatment and follow up people with MS typically are able to lead full productive lives. Because of the numerous treatment options and fairly intensive initial follow up care a Case Manager in collaboration with your provider will be by assigned to provide additional education and coordination of care.

As an academic center we value research and evidence-based medicine. We are involved in numerous research studies at any one time including investigator-initiated and industry trials. All patients are enrolled in a data base and if appropriate candidates for a trial they are contacted to and ask if they wish to participate.

Continuing education of medical students, residents, nursing and physician assistant students, as well as Neurology, Psychiatry is critical to our mission and students are a part of routine care.

Continuity is key in establishing good relationships between patients and providers across the continuum of care from the day of diagnosis throughout the course of the disease. At the UNMC MS Center you will work with a primary provider who will get to know you and your specific needs.

Our program is the only multidisciplinary center accredited by the National Multiple Sclerosis Society in the state of Nebraska and has been a member of the Consortium of Multiple Sclerosis Centers since 1998. UNMC is the only MS Center with fellowship-trained neurologist specializing in MS in the state of Nebraska.
