Admissions Information - Undergraduate

Admission to the College of Nursing is competitive and is based primarily on GPA of college/university course work and the total number of non-nursing courses successfully completed.

 The UNMC College of Nursing offers:
  • Bachelor of Science in Nursing - Traditional (BSN)
  • Bachelor of Science in Nursing - Accelerated (Accelerated BSN)
  • Registered Nurse to Bachelor of Science in Nursing (RN to BSN)

The starting date for the Traditional and RN-BSN program is August. Applications are reviewed in March for August admission.  Deadlines for receipt of application materials are: February 1st for fall admission.  No application materials are accepted after the deadline. Early application is strongly encouraged.  Applicants are expected to track the status of the application process online.

Students may indicate a preference for one of the five campuses (Omaha, Lincoln, Kearney, Norfolk or Scottsbluff) and every effort will be made to match students with their first preference. Please do not rank a campus you are not willing to attend. Placements are made on a space available basis.

The Accelerated BSN program begins the Tuesday following Memorial day and continues for 12 consecutive months.  The deadline for applications to the Accelerated BSN program is October 1 of each year.

Admission Requirements
  • Students must meet University of Nebraska requirements for admission
  • An overall GPA of at least 2.5 (on a 4.0 scale) is required for all non-nursing course work and all course work completed within the University system prior to admission. A course grade of "C" or above is needed for any courses required for the nursing degree.
  • Two letters of reference
  • A completed, signed and notarized disclosure statement
  • In some cases, a personal interview may be required
  • RN students must provide proof of licensure as a registered nurse
  • Final acceptance is dependent on successful completion of all pre-requisite courses and evidence of proper immunizations and CPR certification for Health Professionals
  • International Students
    Students with English as a second language must present current (within the last 2 years) scores from instruments that measure listening, structure, reading, writing and oral communication competency in the English Language.  The Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) and the Test of Spoken English (TSE) are acceptable examinations to demonstrate English language competency.

    The minimum scoring standards are:
    • Internet Based TOEFL (iBT): minimum score of 83. A TSE score is not required.
    • Computer Based TOEFL (CBT): minimum score of 220 and a TSE minimum score of 55.
    • Paper Based TOEFL (PBT): minimum score of 550 and TSE minimum score of 55.
