The faculty, administration and staff welcome your interest in the University of Nebraska Medical Center College of Nursing. A baccalaureate nursing degree will allow you to expand your knowledge, increase your nursing and leadership skills, and gain credentials. Nurses are taking on greater responsibility and must continue to pursue lifelong learning. Personal satisfaction and professional growth will increase your career opportunities in management positions, research and community health as demonstrated by many of our graduates who are employed in hospitals, clinics and agencies across the nation. Nurses with BSN degrees are often paid a higher salary and are promoted to management positions. In addition, some jobs require a BSN degree including many jobs with the federal government. Education Requirements:
You must complete 20 nursing credits at UNMC including one clinical course which is usually Community Health Nursing. As an option, you may challenge 4 hours of the 24 hours required. You may challenge all courses except NRSG 420 and 385. NLN mobility exams are no longer required to validate prior nursing education. There are no exceptions to the 20 credit hour rule.
All the above courses are available online. Although the courses are offered yearly, not all courses are offered every semester and some courses are pre-requisite to others. An orientation is required. Students register at the Omaha campus. Upon admission, you will be assigned a faculty advisor who will facilitate your scheduling/degree completion. NRSG 385 requires a project. Upon successful completion of NRSG 385 and the clinical project, 16 nursing credits will be awarded. A one-time transfer cost is charged after the completion of NRSG 385 for the additional 11 credits necessary for graduation. The cost for the 11 credits is calculated at ½ the current resident tuition rate. This is in lieu of taking NLN mobility tests or additional nursing courses. This plan can build on your professional and clinical experiences. If you have the pre-requisite and nursing support course work completed, you can complete the BSN within one or two years on any of our campuses.
Where to Begin:
The first step is to make an appointment with Student Services for a review of your transcripts. You can meet with a Student Services advisor on any of our campuses. Please bring a copy of ALL nursing and college transcripts. They will evaluate the courses that you have already taken and help you with a plan of study.
