The Area of Specialization

Access to primary health care remains a national priority. Family nurse practitioners offer families of all ages greater access to high quality, cost-effective, comprehensive primary health care in rural and urban settings. Graduate nursing education preparing family nurse practitioners integrates knowledge and skills related to theory, research, health policy and advanced nursing practice.

Career Opportunities

Family nurse practitioners provide primary health care in settings such as community health centers, public health departments, nursing centers, hospital outpatient departments, employee health clinics, physicians' offices and rural health clinics. In addition, family nurse practitioners engage in educational, consultative, research, administrative and legislative activities to promote greater access to high quality, cost-effective primary health care.

Eligibility for Certification

Upon completion of the MSN program in this area of specialization, students will be qualified to take the professional certification examination as a Family Nurse Practitioner.

Curricula

Admission Policy

FNP applications for admission are considered once a year in May (see policy). The application deadline (including all transcripts and letters of recommendation)  is February 1. Students admitted in May will start classes in the Fall.
