Health Systems Nurse Specialist

The Area of Specialization

The Health Systems Nurse Specialist (HSNS) curriculum prepares nurse leaders to transform health care systems in organizations and communities. The knowledge and skills to design, implement, and evaluate system-level interventions that improve patient safety, decrease health disparities, use emerging information technologies, decrease health care costs, and provide culturally competent health care are emphasized. Rural and urban health systems and communities are addressed.

Three different advanced practice nursing specialties - each needed for creating equitable, effective, and efficient health care systems for the twenty-first century - are available in the HSNS curriculum.

Career Opportunities
  • Nursing Administration (NA)
These advanced practice nurses lead in strategic and operational decision making, managing and evaluating major organizational transitions, coordinating clinical programs across the continuum of care, and facilitating health work environments and collaborative practice in diverse health care settings.
Eligibility for Certification

This program helps to prepare graduates to take certification examinations in the specialties of Nursing Administration and Community Public Health Nursing (experience requirements vary between the two specialties).
